Moorland Federation Expands City Residential to Include Years 3–5

Moorland Federation Expands City Residential to Include Years 3–5

Traditionally offered to Year 3 pupils from Cutcombe, Exford, Timberscombe, and St Dubricius (Porlock), the trip was expanded to include pupils from seven Federation schools—adding Dunster First School, Langford Budville Primary, and Dulverton Junior School—and was also extended to include Years 4 and 5 from our primary settings.

The two-day residential offered a rich and varied itinerary designed to develop pupils' curiosity, independence, and cultural awareness through first-hand experience of city life.

Pupils travelled by train from Taunton to Bristol Temple Meads and enjoyed a packet boat tour of Bristol Docks—a memorable moment as two separate school groups spotted and waved at one another from the water.
A highlight of the trip was our visit to Hannah More Primary, where pupils explored the contrasts between life in a large urban school and their own small, rural settings. We were delighted to welcome Nick from The3Engineers, who delivered an engaging talk on engineering careers and read The Adventures of Scout, prompting meaningful discussion on litter, river systems, and environmental impact—connecting directly to what pupils observed during the trip and relate to how it reaches our own coastlines by our schools .

Other key experiences included:
A performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the theatre
An overnight stay, which was a first for many children
Exploring SS Great Britain and stepping back in time
Being inquisitive and getting hands-on at We The Curious

The residential exemplified the power of shared experiences across a federation and the value of collaborative planning in delivering high-impact enrichment. Staff reported that pupils returned more confident, inquisitive, and connected—both to their learning and to each other. This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to broadening horizons and providing consistent, high-quality opportunities for all pupils. We’re already looking forward to what next year might bring!
