E-safety for Children and Young People

Children and young people spend increasing amounts of time online and pupils at school now have never known a world without the internet.

Keeping Your Child Safe Online

In today's digital world, children and young people are spending more time online than ever before, for learning, socialising and entertainment. While the internet offers many benefits, it's vital that we help our children navigate it safely and responsibly.

At the Moorland Federation, we are committed to promoting online safety and supporting parents and carers with the tools they need to help children stay safe in the digital world.

Why Online Safety Matters

From social media and messaging apps to gaming platforms and online learning, children are exposed to a wide range of online experiences. Without proper guidance and supervision, they may be vulnerable to:

  • Inappropriate content
  • Online bullying
  • Privacy risks and data misuse
  • Unwanted contact or grooming
  • Overuse or screen time concerns

Helping children understand how to use the internet safely is a shared responsibility between schools and families.

Top Tips for Parents (Based on NSPCC Guidance)

Here are some practical ways to keep your child safe online:

  • Set up parental controls on devices, broadband, and apps
  • Talk regularly with your child about what they’re doing online
  • Know who they're talking to—encourage open conversations about online friendships
  • Be aware of age restrictions for apps, games, and platforms
  • Establish screen time boundaries to promote healthy habits
  • Explore sites and games together to understand what they’re accessing
  • Encourage them to tell you or a trusted adult if something makes them uncomfortable

You can find more tips on the NSPCC Online Safety Hub.
